What is a sober living home?

A sober living home is a structured, substance-free residence where people continue their recovery after treatment while they rebuild the skills and stability needed to live independently.

Sober living sits between two worlds. Rehab and inpatient treatment provide intensive clinical care — detox, therapy, and addressing the roots of addiction. Independent living is the goal at the other end. The gap between them is where many people struggle, because leaving treatment often means returning to old environments with little day-to-day support. A sober living home fills that gap with structure, accountability, and community.

Most homes share a few core features: a fully substance-free environment supported by routine drug testing, clear house rules like curfews and shared chores, an expectation that residents work, attend school, or continue outpatient treatment, and regular attendance at recovery meetings. Many homes, including ours, also have a live-in house manager who provides guidance and keeps the home running.

Who is it for? Adults committed to their recovery who want a stable, supportive place to practice sober living before returning to full independence. People typically come from inpatient treatment, outpatient programs, incarceration, or simply an unstable living situation that makes sobriety harder to maintain.

The length of stay varies by person. Most residents stay somewhere between three months and a year — long enough for new routines and relationships to take hold. Research on structured recovery housing consistently links it to better long-term outcomes, including lower relapse rates and improved stability in work and housing.

At Redeem Living, our Redemption House in Lakeland is a men's recovery residence built on exactly these principles. If you are weighing your options, we are glad to talk it through — no pressure, just honest answers.

Common questions

How is sober living different from rehab?
Rehab is the clinical stage of recovery, with detox, therapy, and medical care. Sober living is what comes next: a structured, supportive home where you practice recovery and life skills while easing back into everyday life.
Do I have to have finished treatment first?
Not always, but most residents come from inpatient or outpatient treatment. The important thing is a genuine commitment to sobriety and willingness to follow house rules. Contact us and we'll talk through your situation.
